Located approximately 35 minutes from Bangor in Bucksport, this fort played a part in Maine's history. Dating back to the mid-1800s, Fort Knox was built to help protect the region from a potential British naval invasion. Troops were stationed here during the Spanish-American in 1898. It is America's first fort and Maine's largest historic fort. It continues to be maintained by Friends of Fort Knox.

Open seasonally, visitors can explore the grounds, as well as within the walls itself. See the cannons, visit the lodging quarters, and walk the hallways. Bring a picnic for a beautiful spot for lunch with views of the Penobscot River, Verona Island, and the waterfront.

Entrance to explore the Fort for Maine residents is $2.50 for kids 5 to 11, $4.50 for ages 12-65, and free for seniors. On-site parking is available. Guided tours are available as well.
